The evening secondary education major program will prepare you as a professional educator to meet the many challenges of the 21st century classroom, teaching grades 7-12. You will be instructed and mentored by a highly qualified faculty: All full-time and adjunct faculty members in the education department at Cedar Crest are certified teachers.
Cedar Crest recognizes that adult students have a lot of responsibilities. That’s why we’ve designed this program to be able to be taken through evening classes so you can more easily complete your education with your schedule.
This program leads to Level I certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The teacher preparation program at Cedar Crest College is grounded in a strong liberal arts foundation that is aimed at providing our future teachers with a strong background in academic content-area knowledge.
As an undergraduate student in the Cedar Crest College education department, you will co-major in Secondary Education and an academic content area appropriate for certification. Options for this co-major include:
- Biology*
- Chemistry*
- English
- Mathematics*
- Social Studies
- Spanish (K-12)
*Notes a co-major in our traditional undergraduate women’s college, and is unavailable for male-identifying students. Courses are offered during the day.
As a Cedar Crest College graduate, you will be more marketable as a teacher because you will have a firm knowledge base in adapting learning for special needs students and English language learners. While teaching positions are open in every content area listed above, school districts are currently expressing difficulty finding certified secondary teachers in science, mathematics, and K-12 Spanish. Successful graduates in these content areas are frequently promised contracts by school districts immediately upon certification.
If you wish to earn additional teaching certifications, you will work individually with faculty to develop a plan to reach your goals.
Coming to Cedar Crest with some previous credits under your belt? We see how hard you worked for your previous credits, so that’s why we’ve developed a generous transfer credit policy. Our transfer counselors will help you make sure you can finish strong.
Student Teaching at Cedar Crest
For students seeking teacher certification, per Pennsylvania Department of Education requirements, you will be required to complete a full semester of student teaching in your final semester of the program. This will require you to teach full-time, during the day, during regular school hours. Additionally, our program features several field experiences that will need to be completed during school hours.
