A four-year, full-tuition scholarship was up for grabs when Cedar Crest College hosted the 12th Annual Scholarship Competition Experience January 19-23. The virtual recognition ceremony took place on Saturday, January 23.

Well over 100 high school students from 14 different states were invited to participate and completed a three-hour exam consisting of multiple-choice and true-false questions covering the arts, mathematics, science and the humanities. There was also a writing component to the test. Traditionally, the students sit for the exam on campus, but this year the exam was taken online.

The exam was completed early in the week followed by a Saturday full of virtual events. Per tradition, President Elizabeth M. Meade, PhD kicked off Scholarship Competition Day by quizzing the 69 News at Sunrise anchors on WFMZ. Watch President Meade on WMFZ

Saturday afternoon, participating students attended a panel discussion where questions were answered by faculty and current students. A variety of topics were covered ranging from campus food and undergraduate research opportunities to where alumni are currently working or attending graduate school. Faculty from the School of Nursingforensic science and psychology shared detailed information about their programs’ structure and learning outcomes.

The panel was followed by the virtual recognition ceremony where the 25 semifinalists were announced, including the top five finalists. The top five continued to the interview portion of the competition. The winner will be notified and announced in the coming weeks.

The competition aims to give high-achieving students a chance to experience the College’s mission of educating future leaders through scholarship, global connectivity, wellness and service. In recognition of their academic achievements, every participant will receive at minimum a $2,000 scholarship over four years ($500 per year). Participants finishing in 11th-25th place will receive a $4,000 scholarship over four years ($1,000 per year), those finishing in 6th-10th place will receive a $6,400 scholarship over four years ($1,600 per year) and students finishing in 2nd – 5th place will receive an $8,000 scholarship over for years ($2,000 per year). The winner will receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship and will be announced in February.
