Kathleen Mallari ’20

While scrolling through her Instagram feed Kathleen Mallari ’20, a global studies major, saw a posting for the IMPACT! (Inspiring, Motivating and Preparing for Action towards Civic Transformation) Program on the Philippine Consulate of New York page. The IMPACT program, funded by the Philippine Consulate in Washington, D.C., is a professional development program providing firsthand experience with the American government through internship placements.

“My experiences abroad (funded by the College) and the cross-disciplinary curriculum of my major really helped prepare me well for this opportunity,” said Mallari.

Mallari will be placed as an intern in a congressional office, nonprofit or federal agency for her time in the program. She plans to make it back to the New York City area where she is from but will take the time she is spending in Washington, D.C. to make as many new connections as she can.

Kathleen added, “My global studies major and my political science minor were a perfect fit. In my cover letter, I talked about my passion for building community on campus. My experience in being the founding President of the College's first Asian Student Association was a great opportunity to showcase initiative in creating community for the College's Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) students.”

Morgan Blickley

Morgan Blickley
Writing and Biology, Minor in Chemistry

Morgan Blickley is graduating with a double major in writing and biology and a minor in chemistry and will be attending the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. With two majors and a minor, Blickley explored rigorous coursework in the humanities and sciences over her time at Cedar Crest.

“Combining two completely different fields into one course of study has also helped me to explore connections between the arts and the sciences. This exploration culminated in my Honors thesis project, in which I began writing a novel with influences from Greek mythology and animal behavior,” Blickley said.

Blickley also took full advantage of research and travel opportunities at Cedar Crest to prepare her for veterinary school and gain a global perspective.

“At Cedar Crest, I performed behavioral research on endangered African penguins over four years, which helped me establish an interest in conservation and animal behavior. Additionally, I had numerous study abroad opportunities to Rio de Janeiro, the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, and several cities in Italy, which taught me to have a global mindset,” said Blickley.

She kept herself busy outside of her studies honing her leadership skills with roles as an instructional assistant, research director and an executive board member for one club and two honor societies.

Blickley is looking forward to studying exotic animal medicine, pathology and toxicology in veterinary school.

Christiana Vandegrift
Exercise Science, Minor in Sport and Exercise Psychology

Christiana Vandegrift

Christiana (Christi) Vandegrift has dedicated her time at Cedar Crest to the growing field of health sciences. She is an exercise science major with a minor in sport and exercise psychology. The Cedar Crest health science program includes biology, chemistry, psychology and business coursework that all serve as a foundation for further clinical training. The curriculum prepares students for certification or licensure as technicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists or technologists in specific areas of patient care.

Christi knew she wanted to go on to be a physical therapist and wanted to focus on learning both inside and outside of the classroom. She sought help from her advisor and health sciences chair, Diane Babbit, Ph.D. Who connected Christi with a local physical therapy practice to help Christi get firsthand experience with her future profession and gain hands-on practice.

“That experience is priceless. There is no value I can put on that,” said Christi.

Christi has also found career preparation through a number of leadership positions on campus including Admissions Ambassador, a First-Year Experience mentor and president of the Exercise Science Club. “Becoming a FYE mentor helped me find my place in the community and connected me with other campus leadership opportunities,” said Christi.

From the exercise science lab to admissions events, Christi has made the most of her Cedar Crest experience and it has prepared her for life after graduation. Next year, Christi will take the next step toward her physical therapy career in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Jamie Kahn

Jamie Kahn
English and Writing

Jamie Kahn is graduating with a double major in English and writing and starting her career as a writer and copyeditor for WebFX, an internet marketing agency based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Kahn’s position is remote, and she will be moving to Portland, Oregon.

“I’m most looking forward to using my writing skills and being able to make a career out of my passion for writing,” said Kahn.

She was also accepted into New York University’s XE: Experimental Humanities & Social Engagement M.A. program in Interdisciplinary Studies but has deferred her enrollment to start her career.

“I think all of my professors set me up for success. They pushed me to be the best version of myself and saw my full potential,” added Kahn.

Celeste Lambert
Master of Science in Forensic Science

Celeste Lambert ’20

Celeste Lambert, originally from Virginia, was searching for the right accredited forensic science graduate program when she found Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She is now graduating with a Master of Science in Forensic Science this year.

"I learned to ask questions and not be afraid to ask. The more you ask the more you learn," said Lambert.

Lambert has been performing in-depth research focused on cable times, more commonly known as zip ties. Her research works to support the Westchester County Forensics by creating a database of cable ties, their unique characteristics and measurements. Lambert worked to collect, precisely measure and populate a working database.

After graduation, Lambert hopes to move onto a position as a trace analyst or firearms analyst near her hometown in Virginia.

Venus Cabrera

Venus Cabrera
Media Studies, Minor in Marketing

Venus Cabrera ’20, a communication major, has been busy this spring. She finished her coursework and a senior capstone project. She played her final season of collegiate basketball, worked in the athletics office and nannied part-time. Cabrera was also honing her skills as a social media intern for the Washington Memorial Chapel’s Justice Bell committee that was planning a centennial commemoration of women’s suffrage.

“I was interested in the internship immediately when I learned that I would be managing social media accounts and utilizing the skills that I’ve acquired, especially in recent semesters,” said Cabrera.

Cabrera’s internship tested her skills in managing and creating content for a website and social media accounts, understanding audience engagement and brainstorming new campaigns. Fortunately, she was prepared. The internship’s tasks complemented the work Cabrera has done in the classroom in her communication courses.

"In my Social Media Fundraising class, I gained direct experience and did similar work by partnering with a nonprofit and creating a social media marketing plan that the nonprofit could then choose to implement,” said Cabrera.

For Cabrera, the goal of the internship, to promote the centennial commemoration of women’s suffrage, was equally as important as the skills she was practicing, “I love that I am able to remind people of how important it is that 100 years ago women received the right to vote,” added Cabrera.

Since the suspension of in-person classes in March, Cabrera was home balancing her internship with her classes, re-envisioning her senior project and a significant hourly commitment to a nannying position. Cabrera plans to nanny until she finds a job in communications and potentially pursue a master’s in communication.

Allen Zelno
Master of Science in Nursing

Allen Zelno

Allen Zelno '20, a member of Cedar Crest College's first class of nurse practitioners, was among those chosen to witness a proclamation being signed from the Oval Office in honor of National Nurses Day.

Zelno is a parish nurse at St. Luke’s Sacred Heart serving as a resource nurse to the homeless and impoverished in the urban center of Allentown. His work is done at various faith-based community outreach and health organizations. As part of his work he recently secured 19,000 pounds of snack foods for healthcare workers within the network, a donation from Operation Gratitude. This particular story led to his nomination for the White House visit by the Catholic Medical Association.

“I’m just very grateful that all the sacrifices of nurses were recognized by a Presidential Proclamation,” said Zelno. “Also hearing the stories of the other nurses was very humbling to hear that they are making heroic sacrifices in their work on the frontlines.”

Zelno is graduating with his MSN and will be taking his boards to be a nurse practitioner. Zelno has set his sites to make an impact beyond Allentown through work with national organizations such as the Catholic Medical Association, the American Nurses Association and the National Association of Catholic Nurses.

Velazquez’s time volunteering at local elementary schools inspired her to apply for Teach for America, a non-profit program that places educators in low-income schools across the country. She will begin teaching in Texas as a secondary English language arts teacher. Velazquez will also be working toward her teaching certification.

“The information and skills I learned at Cedar Crest will help me succeed in my role,” said Velazquez. “Through communication, I am able to create relationships and connect with students and staff members. Likewise, demonstrating my dedication towards my work will motivate all students to succeed academically.”

To all graduates of 2020:

You have already shown perseverance, you have already dealt with adversity, you have already met so many challenges.  You are living history even as you step into the future.  Among all the things you have learned at Cedar Crest, take with you the soft skills - be kind, be patient, be generous, be supportive,  be empathetic and most of all be yourself.

During difficult times it can be challenging to find joy and purpose. But, for each of you, your exceptional accomplishments should provide you with both. There is a Japanese concept called Ikigai, put simply, Ikigai means possessing the following qualities, doing; what you love, what you are good at, and what the world needs. Your work through-out your studies here at Cedar Crest, the commitment you have shown to the betterment of society, and the passion I’ve seen in each of you tell me you have much to be joyful for and significant purpose in life. Your Ikigai will be your ongoing source of sustenance and success in all you do.

We are all so very proud to have been a part of your journey.

To the Cedar Crest Class of 2020: It seems like yesterday that you joined our community, and now you are leaving us under circumstances that seemed unimaginable only a few months ago. I am so proud of the work that you have done under extraordinary pressure for the last 2 months, and how kind you have been to each other and to me despite your individual struggles. I hope that we will celebrate in person in August... and at least we’ll always have Rio!
