Today’s world is becoming increasingly interconnected in every sense: economic, political, cultural and environmental. That’s why it’s vital for college graduates to be able to comprehend these factors from a global perspective. In fact, an ever-increasing number of fields, including business, anthropology, psychology and many more, rely heavily on employees with a deep understanding of the global community.

Cedar’s Crest’s global studies program offers courses that provide a broad look at the phenomena of globalization and the individual factors that contribute and are affected by it. As a student in this program, you will develop the ability to understand the world from multiple perspectives and be given the opportunity to travel abroad for a week or a full semester in order to experience other societies firsthand.

You will also be able to customize your degree in order to best fit your career goals. Our global studies major offers three separate concentrations that focus on major areas within the field:

  • Religion, Culture, and Society
  • International Business and Economics
  • Global Stewardship

Also, you may choose to add an additional major or minor, enabling you to acquire further specialized skills that will help you realize your career goals.

When you graduate from this program, you will possess an in-depth knowledge of global issues, practices and theories, enabling you to pursue any one of a number of exciting career opportunities.

The Cedar Crest Advantage

Experienced faculty
Most of our global studies faculty members hold doctoral degrees, have extensive fieldwork experience, and have published research. They are also committed to the mentorship of each of their students, ensuring that they students receive the best education possible.

Living Learning Communities
The Social Science and Biological Sciences Departments offers two living learning communities (LLCs) designed for global studies majors: the Global Social Justice LLC and the Environmental Stewardship LLC. Each closely ties in with topics discussed in the global studies courses, and allows students with similar interests to share living space and collaborate on projects outside of the classroom.

Study abroad trips
We offer a variety of faculty-led week-long and semester-long study abroad programs, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in a country whose politics, economy and culture you have studied. Recent destinations: Belize, Egypt, England, India and the Galapagos Islands.

Our student exchange program
As a Cedar Crest student, you may enroll in summer courses at colleges located overseas, such as those in South Korea and Bangladesh. Students from these countries, in turn, may take summer courses at Cedar Crest.

An interdisciplinary approach
Our curriculum is designed to allow students to add another major or minor to their degree. This means you may customize your educational experience to better prepare yourself to succeed in your desired field.

Mission Statement

The intellectual and applied objectives of the Global Studies major are to promote global competence in the sense of transnational understanding and global engagement in the sense of communication and action. The major arises in response to major historic changes in the world – the rise and decline of nation states in the 19th and 20th centuries and the emergence of a modern world system in the 21st century. The new world requires a breadth of understanding beyond that of most traditional majors and minors.
