Dr. Elizabeth M. Meade Named Cedar Crest College’s Fourteenth President
Allentown, Pa. (June 21, 2018)—The Board of Trustees of Cedar Crest College is pleased to announce that Dr. Elizabeth M. Meade has been named the fourteenth President of Cedar Crest College, effective July 1, 2018.
Dr. Meade, who has been serving as Interim President since July 2017, has been a member of the Cedar Crest faculty since 1993. Before her appointment to Interim President last year, she was the College’s Provost for a five-year period. Previously, she was the Acting Provost and Chair of Cedar Crest’s Department of Humanities.
During her tenure as Interim President, Dr. Meade has been instrumental in leading the implementation of the College’s recently approved strategic plan, advancing programmatic areas, and showing a commitment to disciplined fundraising that is refreshing. She also recently began a $5.2M renovation of the student center and a residence hall, along with a branding initiative for the College to proudly declare its identity as a 21st century women’s college.
In a note to the Cedar Crest Community, Rear Admiral (retired) David P. Keller, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Cedar Crest College, stated: “The Board is delighted to have Elizabeth as our new President. Since joining the Cedar Crest faculty in 1993, she has distinguished herself as a strategic and forward-thinking leader, and one who was willing to champion initiatives needed to ensure the College’s viability in the ever-changing higher education landscape. She has deep experience across all aspects of learning and higher education, and her long history with the College, along with her own experience as an undergraduate at a women's liberal arts college, truly emboldens her to continue to advance and extend the Cedar Crest legacy.”
Keller continued, “Today, Elizabeth is taking the helm of an institution which is appropriately recognized as an outstanding liberal arts college, primarily for women, dedicated to the education of the next generation of leaders – one with the purpose and ambition to prepare students for life in a global economy, one whose culture promotes educating the whole student at all stages of life and experience, one that fully values diversity, access and community, and one that is financially strong and healthy. We are so pleased that she has accepted this appointment, and with Elizabeth firmly at the helm, we are confident in – and energized by – what lies ahead for Cedar Crest.”
“I am so very honored by the opportunity to lead this institution, with its rich 150-year history of educating women, its 50-year history of providing adult and graduate education to women and men, its deep commitment to the values of access and inclusion, and its profound relevance to the social and economic needs of the region and the nation. I am excited to work more closely with the most dedicated group of faculty, staff and alumnae any institution could want. We will continue to instill in all of our students, through a rigorous curriculum that integrates and connects all of the student’s learning experiences, the intellectual curiosity and independent thinking that promotes intellectual and personal growth. Cedar Crest College has built an incredible foundation, a clear mission and vision for the future, and an especially strong community to support this vision – and I am confident Cedar Crest will continue to be a vibrant and leading force in higher education,” said Meade.
Dr. Meade earned her master’s degree in philosophy and Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston College and earned a bachelor’s degree with distinction in German language and literature from Bryn Mawr College. She is married to Arturo Perez who is a software engineer with Cisco Systems. They have three children, ages 22, 19 and 14.
