Cedar Crest College is pleased to announce the upcoming visit of author and artist Sara Woster for a book reading, creative workshops, and an art exhibition. Organized by the Art and History, Literature, and Language departments, this event is part of the Visiting Writers Series and is funded by the College’s Cultural Programs Fund. Woster’s visit will take place on March 30 and 31.
“Inviting Sara to present her writing and painting highlights the interdisciplinary nature of creative work as a dynamic process. Through her painting, writing, and teaching methods she is a positive influence which we are excited to share with the community,” says Jill Odegaard, MFA, professor of art and chair of the department at Cedar Crest.
About Sara Woster
A Brooklyn-based artist and nonfiction writer, Woster is the author of “Painting Can Save Your Life,” released in July 2022, and the founder of The Painting School. Her animations, multimedia, and collaborative performances have been shown at numerous art venues, including the Hammer Museum, UCLA, and Franklin Art Works in Minneapolis. She has been granted a Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Fellowship, a Franconia Sculpture Park residency, and a Brooklyn Arts Council SU-CASA residency.
Public Book Reading & Signing
On March 30 at 7 p.m., Woster will give a reading from her book, “Painting Can Save Your Life,” followed by a book signing and Q&A session with the audience. Her book explores the transformative power of painting and the intersection between writing and art. Woster will also participate in a student-led interview to create a podcast for “Pitch,” Cedar Crest College’s electronic arts and literature journal, written and edited by students. This free event is open to the public and will take place in Tompkins College Center, 1867.
Painting & Writing Workshops
On March 31, Woster will lead painting and writing workshops, inspired by her book, her unique perspective as a teacher, and her creative process as both a visual artist and writer. The painting workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the writing workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Registration is required and seats are limited.
Art Exhibition & Opening Reception
In addition to the reading and workshops, Woster will also exhibit her work in the Center for Visual Research in Cedar Crest College’s Miller Family Building, with an opening reception on March 31 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will showcase 10 to 15 paintings with a focus on the nocturnal, and will be on display from March 20 through April 20.
