CEDAR CREST FIELD HOCKEY FALLS IN DRAMATIC FASHION IN OVERTIME TO IMMACULATA

Allentown, PA (October 26, 2009) – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team fell, 2-1, in dramatic fashion to Immaculata University on Monday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference play.

The winner of this contest was the sixth and final seed to make the CSAC playoffs so it was a nail-biter from the opening whistle.

Cedar Crest got on the board first when sophomore Tammy Gruzdis (Allentown, PA/Liberty) tipped in a pass from freshman Ashley Jennings (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) at the 16:20 mark in the first half of play to take the 1-0 lead.

Immaculata’s Maureen Town then went on a breakaway to score the second goal of the contest at 24:19 to even the score, 1-1.

The score would remain tied the entire second half, with Cedar Crest holding an 8-4 shot advantage and a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners in that half.

Cedar Crest’s senior goalie Rachel Orlen (Robbinsville, NJ/Highstown) made four key saves in the overtime period, including a penalty stroke, before Immaculata’s Emily Hallett took a pass from Katherine Becker 5:59 into the extra period to end the contest.

Immaculata held a 14-13 advantage in shots, while Cedar Crest held a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.  Orlen made nine saves on the day in goal for Cedar Crest.

This marks the sixth loss in overtime for the Falcons this season and the eighth one-goal loss of the season.  No other team in the country has played as many overtime games as Cedar Crest has this season.

Cedar Crest ends the season at 5-12 overall (2-6 CSAC).
